MICHAEL HERRIN
Michael has practiced landscape design in his native San Francisco Bay Area since 2003. Herrin works extensively throughout the region, designing landscapes that express his lifelong commitment to preserving natural environments through garden creation.
For Herrin, the art and practice of landscape design is about working in the sustainable intersections of nature and culture, balancing a thoughtful understanding of the client’s needs with respect for site-specifications, such as history and environmental context. To his design aesthetic, Herrin brings a deep understanding of ecology and habitat restoration coupled with a strong belief that gardens full of color
and vitality thrive when based on the ecological principles of low maintenance and regionally appropriate planting. Herrin’s landscape designs incorporate California native flora and principles of wildlife habitat planting in order to create gardens that invite and inspire.
Herrin, a Principal at Herrin Landscape Design which he founded in 2009, received a Masters in Landscape Architecture MLA in 2007 from the University of California, Berkeley to which he returned after completing a BS in Environmental Studies. Herrin’s collaborative work with Bluewagon Landscape and Design has been recognized by the Santa Clara County chapter of Master Gardeners and featured in the 2011 Master Gardeners Spring Garden Tour.

Who we are
17 is the number of the climate zone that defines the Bay Area and Coastal California, the region where Green 17 was born and the landscape that inspires us year in and year out. Green 17 was founded by Tim O’Shea and DJ Johns, whose collective expertise and mutual devotion to the directives of natural beauty is the common ground for their distinct approaches to exterior design.
What we do
We are in the practice of connecting people to nature.
We curate properties whose owners seek the influence of beauty on their souls and spirits.
We listen – we read between the lines to interpret the story of a site, and the constraints that define it.
We study engineering, ecology and aesthetics to generate integrated solutions for our projects.
We analyze the interaction of space, light and repose to deliver a response that is simple and elegant.
Why we work
We value the intangible beauty that nature lays at our feet on a daily basis.
We value collisions of architectural structure and natural line.
We value the priorities of balance, texture and scale.
We value the opportunity to provide what is needed, and what is desired.
We value the shared gift of earth and exalt the opportunities to recline together in its occasional embrace.

Irrigation Audits & Assessments
An irrigation audit is the method of inspecting and measuring how effective the sprinklers are working together to apply the water within each individual irrigation zone or test area. Results are compiled and used in combination with other observations and measurements to facilitate irrigation management.
Water Reuse Systems
Water Reuse Systems or Water harvesting provides an independent water supply during regional water restrictions and in developed countries is often used to supplement the main supply. It can provide water when there is a drought, can help reduce demand on wells and on regional water supplies.
SMART Controller Technologies
Smart irrigation controllers help to manage watering schedules and run times automatically to meet specific landscape needs. These controllers are a proven technology that can improve outdoor water and could help save up to 30% of landscape water
use.
Fertilizer Injection
Fertilizer Injection or Fertigation is a process in which synthetic or organic fertilizer is distributed along with water in your drip or spray irrigation system. There is abundant research available that supports the superiority of fertigation as compared to traditional fertilizing techniques.
Low Volume Type Irrigation
Also known as Low-flow irrigation systems, or microirrigation, is an irrigation method that operates under a lower water pressure than spray or rotor systems with a “lower-flow” resulting when combined with water delivery components. Low volume irrigation is used in agriculture, horticulture, nursery and other growing industries.
Compost Teas
Compost tea makes the benefits of compost go farther. What’s more, when sprayed on the leaves, compost tea helps suppress foliar diseases, increases the amount of nutrients available to the plant, helps rebuild soil and speeds the breakdown of toxins. Compost teas can also be distributed through the irrigation system via fertilizer Injection.
